Do you see a strong possibility of escalating tensions or a war-like situation in the Middle East based on the current developments in the region, even though the situation remains unpredictable, especially considering President Trump’s stance and decision-making style?

I think we have to acknowledge that this is no longer routine geopolitical noise. It’s a serious escalation, and for India the issue is very simple — oil.

If crude stays elevated for even a few weeks, it hits us immediately through inflation, the rupee, and the current account. We don’t need a prolonged war for this to hurt — sustained high oil itself is enough.

On the Trump factor — unpredictability adds volatility. Sudden decisions, especially around geopolitics or trade, can move markets overnight. But for Indian equities, oil and global liquidity will matter more than personalities over time.

Markets generally tend to price in developments well in advance, as reflected by the recovery of nearly half the losses on March 2. In a worst-case scenario, do you expect another 5 percent correction from current levels?

Yes, that’s very possible.

The bounce we’ve seen feels more like a pause than a clear bottom. Markets have reacted to the headlines, but they haven’t fully adjusted to what sustained high oil or continued FII selling could mean.

In phases like this, sentiment and liquidity dominate. If uncertainty persists, markets can easily drift lower before finding stability. That’s just how risk-off environments behave.

Do you believe President Trump is currently the biggest risk factor for equity markets, given his sudden and often unexpected policy decisions?

In the short term, US policy unpredictability is definitely a volatility trigger. For us, that shows up through oil, a stronger dollar, and foreign flows.

But I wouldn’t say that’s the only risk. AI disruption is a serious structural factor as well — especially for India given how large IT is in our index. The market is still figuring out how AI reshapes traditional services models.

So near term, geopolitics is driving volatility. Structurally, AI and global liquidity cycles are equally important.

The impact of the US-Iran tensions was visible across sectors. In this market correction, which sectors or themes would you consider attractive for buying?

This is not the time to be heroic. It’s a time to be selective.

I would say — be patient.

IT is facing two challenges at the same time: global macro uncertainty and AI reshaping the revenue model. Valuations have corrected meaningfully, especially in large caps, but earnings clarity is still evolving.

Instead of trying to catch the exact bottom, a gradual approach makes more sense — build exposure slowly as companies demonstrate how they are adapting.

Do you see clear visibility of an earnings rebound in the coming quarters? If so, is the expected earnings growth likely to be broad-based or concentrated in a few sectors?

It’s visible — but selective.

Private banks, defence, and parts of manufacturing look relatively steady. But if oil remains elevated, consumption and discretionary sectors may struggle.

For a broad-based rebound, we need oil to stabilise and inflation to remain under control. If that happens, the recovery can widen over the next few quarters. If not, earnings growth will stay concentrated.

Buying was also seen in heavyweights, including Reliance Industries. Shares of Reliance Industries climbed about 3 percent after falling nearly 4.5 percent in the previous three sessions.

"From the market perspective, the problem with an ongoing war is that sudden developments like attacks on oil facilities can impact markets. If crude spikes, the market will be affected. On the other hand, a couple of days of smooth oil trade can trigger risk-on sentiment and facilitate a market rebound," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments.

"It is important to note that India outperformed yesterday with only a 1.5 percent cut in the Nifty compared to the 12.1 percent crash in South Korea’s Kospi. Markets which did well this year like the South Korean market are facing huge volatility triggered by profit booking," he added.

According to Vijayakumar, volatility linked to news and events may continue in the near term.

"This will give opportunities to investors to slowly accumulate high-quality stocks and wait with patience. Perhaps emotional intelligence is more important now than financial acumen," he said.

2) Positive global cues: Asian markets also supported sentiment. South Korea’s Kospi rebounded sharply and jumped about 10 percent. Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng were also trading higher. US markets ended in positive territory on Wednesday.

The gains followed overnight strength on Wall Street after reports that Iran had signalled openness to talks to end the war. Comments by US President Donald Trump aimed at stabilising oil markets also helped ease investor concerns.

"On the global front, US markets ended the previous session on a firm note, while South Korea’s Kospi index is trading sharply higher, gaining more than 10 per cent, offering some supportive external cues," Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money told PTI.

3) India VIX declines: The India VIX, often referred to as the market’s fear gauge, declined nearly 10 percent to 19.04. The index measures expected market volatility, and a decline generally indicates easing investor anxiety and improving market sentiment.

4) Rupee recovers: The rupee recovered from its recent lows and rose 48 paise to 91.57 against the US dollar, supported by gains in domestic equities. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 92.16 and touched a high of 91.30 before trading at 91.57 against the American currency, up 48 paise from its previous close.

However, forex analysts said higher crude oil prices, a stronger US dollar and continued foreign fund outflows amid escalating tensions in the Middle East continued to weigh on the local currency.

5) Oil &amp; gas stocks gain: Buying in energy stocks also supported the market. Shares of Reliance Industries and upstream companies such as ONGC and Oil India pushed the oil and gas index higher by about 2 percent.

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, said the market saw sharp swings during recovery attempts.

"While wild swings amidst recovery attempts unfolded on expected lines, the hammering in the closing hour, shortly after filling the gap, takes away some upside momentum. The subsequent close near 24,450 lends a positive bias nevertheless," he said. According to him, the Nifty could see resistance around 24,625 and 24,840 levels, while a slip below 24,370 may open the possibility of a move towards 24,000–23,550. "A collapse is less expected today though," he added.

The BSE Sensex Next 30 index tracks the next largest and most liquid companies in the BSE 100 that are in the derivative segment and are not constituents of the BSE Sensex 30 index.

In a regulatory filing on Wednesday after market hours, BSE said it will offer cash settled monthly index futures and monthly index options. The expiry date for the contracts will be the last Thursday of the expiry period.

However, BSE didn't inform about the launch date of F&amp;O (futures &amp; options) contracts for the Sensex Next 30 index.

At 9:27 am on March 5, <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/miscellaneous/bselimited/B08">BSE shares</a> were trading nearly 2% higher at Rs 2,674.5 apiece. What's also aiding the sentiment is that the market gave a gap-up opening on March 5.

Most emerging-market currencies rebounded on Wednesday, as mixed signals around the Middle East conflict tempered the oil rally and weighed on the dollar.



Crude (Gains)

Oil prices rose on Thursday amid growing concern over the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as the U.S.-Iran war chokes off vital Middle East oil and gas flows while production facilities limit output.



Gold (Up)

Gold rose on Thursday as the widening Middle East conflict drove investors towards the safe-haven asset, while a softer dollar also lent support to bullion prices.



Fund Flow Action

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) extended their selling streak for the fourth consecutive session on March 4, offloading equities worth Rs 8,752 crore. Meanwhile, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) continued their buying momentum for the sixth straight day, purchasing shares worth over Rs 12,000 crore, helping offset FII outflows.

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Benchmark indices remained in positive territory in afternoon trade, though gains moderated slightly amid continued volatility. At 1:20 pm, the Sensex was up 401 points, or 0.51 percent, at 79,517, while the Nifty rose 151 points to 24,631. Market breadth stayed positive with 2,267 shares advancing against 1,496 declines. Metal and PSU stocks continued to lead the rally. Hindalco surged over 6 percent to top the Nifty gainers, while Coal India jumped around 5 percent and Bharat Electronics gained over 4 percent. NTPC, Reliance Industries and Larsen &amp; Toubro also traded firmly higher. Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index climbed more than 2.5 percent and Nifty Energy rose nearly 2 percent, even as IT stocks remained under pressure with the Nifty IT index down over 1 percent.
