Do you believe the GST reform will significantly boost corporate earnings, especially with strong improvement expected from the second half of FY26 onwards?

GST reforms in form of rate rationalization will reduce the price to the end consumer and should result in an increase in demand and volumes over the medium term. While margins for corporates are not expected to go up, the total profits can be expected to go up. Ceteris paribus, it is expected that corporate profits for many companies can be expected to move up. There could be other factors dictating demand growth as well, but the GST measures will definitely push up the volume growth.

Are you planning to maintain a strong focus on the consumption sector in your portfolio following the rationalisation of GST slabs?

At TRUST MF, we have been a strong believer in India’s demographic dividend and our portfolios have been positioned to benefit from the resilience and recovery of the domestic economy. The GST reforms will provide a further boost to the local consumption oriented stocks.

There have been other measures like lowering of interest rates, improvement in domestic liquidity and more money in the hands of the consumer earlier. We plan to maintain or increase our focus on the consumption sector in our portfolio.

Do you anticipate further policy measures from the government aimed at boosting the economy and mitigating the impact of tariffs?

Indians have proved to be great adapters and improvisors in the recent past. We have seen greater adoption of digital systems in the aftermath of Covid days. We do expect that Government will take further steps to minimize the impact of tariffs and undertake surgical measures like targeted PLI schemes to further boost the affected industries and sectors.

Do you expect President Trump to reduce tariff rates on Indian goods in the coming weeks?

We do expect some resolution to the current tariff impasse facing the country. Trade negotiations can take time, but there should be light at the end of the tunnel. However, tariffs are economically inefficient and are likely to fuel global inflation if they persist for a long period of time. It is step back for trade relations and should be minimized to ensure that benefits of competitive advantaged are not wasted away.

Do you think the resolution of the US-India tariff issue will lead to a significant shift in the stance of Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) towards India?

Uncertainty over tariff imposition and resultant trade disruptions is a real problem and act as a deterrent for current commerce volumes and additions to future capacity as well. A dent in the prospects of a few businesses has severely impacted the investor sentiment. Clarity or resolution over the tariff situation should improve the FPI sentiment a bit.

Is India transitioning from being a nation of savers to a nation of investors? Also, do you foresee a new leg of market uptrend emerging now?

India has already transformed from a nation of savers to investors. There are pockets in South or East which are still a bit more conservative. There should be a healthy asset allocation at all points, but the trend towards higher equity allocation in portfolios is likely to continue.

Indian benchmark indices recovered smartly from the day's low to end flat in a volatile session on September 5. The selling was seen in the FMCG, IT, and realty names, while buying in the auto, metal, media and consumer discretionary stocks helped to regains the intraday losses.

Amid positive global cues, the indices opened higher with Nifty hitting a high of 24,832.35 in the initial hours but failed to build on the gains and amid mid-session profit booking touched low of 24,621.60. However, it closed on flat note amid last hour buying.

At close, the Sensex was down 7.25 points or 0.01 percent at 80,710.76, and the Nifty was up 6.70 points or 0.03 percent at 24,741. BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended flat.

For the week, BSE Sensex and Nifty added 1.2 percent each.

These gains were offset by weakness in consumer and IT counters, with IT reversing early strength to close lower by 1.3% amid global growth concerns. Meanwhile, mid- and small-cap indices posted modest gains of around 0.3% each.

Despite optimism around policy reforms and supportive domestic factors, markets appear to be entering a consolidation phase, cautious given lingering tariff concerns and persistent foreign institutional outflows. That said, trading opportunities remain across sectors. Participants are advised to align their positions accordingly, with a focus on risk management.

After beginning on a strong note, Dalal Street soon turned volatile, with benchmark indicies swinging between positive and negative territory. Geopolitical concerns kept investors cautious, and despite the announcement of GST reforms, overall sentiment remained subdued.

At close, the Sensex was down 7.25 points or 0.01 percent at 80,710.76, and the Nifty was up 6.70 points or 0.03 percent at 24,741.00. About 1968 shares advanced, 1791 shares declined, and 128 shares unchanged.

In the last hour of trade, markets showed a mixed but improving trend across sectors. Nifty Auto extended gains, rising 1.2 percent, remaining the day’s top performer. Nifty Metal and Nifty Media also moved higher, up 0.4 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively, while PSU Bank, Infra, Energy, and Pharma indices managed to stay in the green with marginal gains.

On the other hand, Nifty IT continued to drag, slipping 1.5 percent, while Realty and FMCG also saw notable pressure, down 1.2 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively.

The FMCG pack fell to significant profit-booking after recording a rise over the past five sessions. Information and technology stocks also saw selling as reports suggested that US President Donald Trump would explore tariffs on the Indian IT sector.

"The high valuations even amidst geopolitical and tariff-related headwinds helped bears to accumulate short positions in the market. A significant feature of the present market trend is the weakness in overvalued mid and smallcaps and relative strength in the fairly valued largecaps. This is a healthy trend which can be expected to continue," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments.

From a technical perspective, the index continues to lack a clear directional trend, as bulls and bears alternate dominance on successive days. Notably, Nifty has remained trapped within a broad consolidation band of 24,500–25,000, and only a decisive breakout beyond this range will trigger meaningful momentum on either side, noted Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities.
