The Sensex, which opened on a firm note, rose 376.89 points to 83,836.04 in early trade but later slipped into the red, declining nearly over 400 points from the day’s high to 83,422.11 at around 11:30 a.m. The Nifty also gave up initial gains to trade below the 25,550 mark after touching 25,679.15 earlier in the session.

Key factors behind market decline

1) FII selling continues: Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 1,067.01 crore on Tuesday. This marked the fifth consecutive session of FII outflows since October 29, dampening market sentiment.

2) Profit booking in key sectors: Profit booking was visible in banking, financial services, metal shares among others. The Nifty Metal index fell over 2 percent as the dollar strengthened. A stronger dollar typically makes commodities priced in the greenback costlier for importers, weighing on demand and impacting metal companies.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was steady at 100.16 — up 1.5 percent since last Wednesday, when the Federal Reserve cut interest rates but signalled a slower pace of easing. The firm dollar has added pressure on emerging market currencies and commodities, including metals, which are sensitive to global price movements.

4) Expiry-day volatility: Traders attributed the intraday swings to expiry-related movements, as weekly derivatives contracts expire today. Market volatility typically rises on expiry days as traders square off or roll over their positions.

Technical view

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said the 20-day simple moving average (SMA) helped prevent a sharper decline on Tuesday. "A pullback is possible if Nifty sustains above 25,630–25,650 levels. A move beyond this range could take the index towards 25,770 or even 26,035 in a positive scenario," he added.

Despite the firm start, broader markets were mixed. Midcaps traded flat with a slight positive bias, while smallcaps slipped into negative territory, reflecting continued volatility outside the large-cap space. Meanwhile, India VIX, the volatility index, saw a mild cool-off, suggesting slightly improved sentiment among traders.

On the sectoral front, auto shares extended gains, driven by strong earnings from Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M). The automaker reported a nearly 18 percent year-on-year jump in standalone net profit for the second quarter of FY26, aided by robust growth in tractor and light truck sales, even as its SUV business saw relatively slower momentum.

The Nifty FMCG index also contributed to the day’s gains, snapping a four-day losing streak. Stocks of Britannia Industries, Radico Khaitan, ITC, Nestlé, and Hindustan Unilever (HUL) were among the top performers. Britannia led the rally after posting a stable Q2 performance, with net profit up 23 percent year-on-year—beating estimates—and revenue rising 4 percent compared to last year.

In contrast, metal stocks continued to face headwinds, with the Nifty Metal index extending its losing streak to a second straight session. Hindalco was the biggest drag after its US-based subsidiary Novelis reported weaker-than-expected results over the holiday break. Novelis’ net sales rose 10 percent year-on-year to $4.7 billion, while shipments of flat-rolled products declined marginally to 941 kt from 945 kt a year ago. The muted performance led to several brokerage downgrades and target price cuts for Hindalco.

Looking ahead, analysts expect stock-specific reactions to continue as more companies announce their Q2 results. However, external factors may also play a role in driving sentiment.

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said, “In the coming days, the focus will be on developments in the US Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition against Trump tariffs. Observations by some judges that President Trump had overstepped his authority are significant. If the final judgement aligns with these views, emerging markets—particularly India, which faced steep 50 percent tariffs—could see sharp rallies.”

Vijayakumar added that in the near term, foreign investor activity remains a key risk. “The resumption of sustained selling by FIIs—Rs 15,336 crore over the last five sessions—and the build-up of short positions could weigh on markets,” he noted.

However, a decisive break below 25,450 may dampen sentiment further, inviting renewed selling pressure and potentially extending the decline toward 25,130.”
