Bot accounts, or accounts on social media platforms which are controlled by software rather than humans, have come under the scanner of the Centre with Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology quizzing major social media platforms on how they tackle such accounts, sources said.
The IT ministry on March 11 held a 45-minute meeting headed by IT ministry secretary S Krishnan, cyber laws group coordinator Deepak Goel and others on how malicious information is made viral with the help of bot accounts.
Industry attendees included players like Google, Meta, OpenAI, Snap, Sharechat, Zupee and others.
This meeting comes after a 2025 Indian parliamentary panel report urged the government to create legal, technical frameworks to combat AI-generated fake news and bot-driven misinformation.
Bots function as amplifiers as they are programmed to immediately retweet and tag influential users the moment a content is posted, creating a "manufactured reality" of high engagement.
Officials in the meeting sought information on whether companies have the infrastructure in place to deal with such accounts, or whether there is a need for the government to intervene with specific policies/regulations.
Meity officials have asked industry to share inputs with the government if they have any.
The meeting, according to sources, also touched upon the subject of deepfakes — specifically if copyright regulations, apart from data protection framework, can be used to tackle this menace.
In 2026, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology issued a warning, categorising AI-generated misinformation as a serious threat to public order and democracy.
To combat this, the committee recommended mandatory labelling of AI content, stricter penalties for platforms, and the development of AI-powered dashboards like SAMVAD to monitor real-time trends.
