Summer cold: Causes, symptoms & prevention tips

Contrary to popular belief that cold is something you catch in winter, it doesn’t have to be cold outside for you to catch a cold. And in case you do catch it in summer, it is called a summer cold.

What is summer cold

Viruses that cause cold rely on the cells of other organisms to live and replicate. They are transmitted from host to host when infected respiratory secretions make their way into the mucous membranes of a healthy person.

Causes of summer cold

– Direct person-to-person contact – Inhaling small droplets in the air – Touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes

Cold can be transmitted through

– Changing diapers of an infected person, then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth before washing your hands – Drinking water that has the virus in it

– Runny nose – Sneezing – Cough – Fever – Body and muscle aches – Mouth blisters

Symptoms of cold

– Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet or changing diapers. Thoroughly dry your hands too. – If you don’t have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer instead.

How to prevent  summer cold

– Avoid close contact, such as touching and shaking hands, with people who are sick. – Frequently clean and disinfect touched surfaces and toys. – Keep your immune system functioning at its best year-round by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.
