Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahianand several others were confirmed dead following a helicopter crash in north-western Iran on Sunday, according to state media.
Raisi served as Iran’s eighth president from 2021 until his death. Meanwhile, he is not the only head of state or government to be killed in an aviation accident.
Rene Barrientos Ortuno, who served as the 47th president of Bolivia, was killed in a helicopter crash on April 27, 1969. An assassination was considered a probability but never proven.
Sebastian Pinera served as the President of Chile from 2010-2014 and again from 2018-2022. On February 6, 2024, the Robinson R44 helicopter that he was piloting crashed nose-first into a lake. He survived the crash itself but the impact left him unconscious, unable to remove his safety belt, resulting in drowning.
Joel Rakotomalala served as the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Madagascar from January 13, 1976 until his death due to a helicopter crash in July.
Rashid Karami, who served as Lebanon’s Prime Minister eight times, was assassinated in 1987. On June 1, Karami was killed after a bomb was placed in his helicopter and exploded shortly after taking off.
