US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he brokered truce between India and Pakistan.
This time, while boasting about his role in peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia, the US President once again stated that he used trade to bring India and Pakistan to end hostilities.
Trump made the comments during the tariff negotiations between the US and the European Union on Sunday. While addressing media after the end of the meeting, Trump made the comments as EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen looked on.
“We do a lot of trade with Thailand and Cambodia. Yet I'm reading that they're killing each other... I say this should be an easy one for me because I settled India and Pakistan...,” Trump said as he boasted his role in ending the military standoff between New Delhi and Islamabad back in May.
The US President went on to say, “I called the Prime Ministers of each (Thailand and Cambodia) and I said we're not going to make a trade deal unless you settle the war... By the time I got off, I think they want to settle now... India and Pakistan were really getting ready to go at it. So getting those things settled, and if I can use trade to do that, then it's my honour.”
A Bloomberg report said that leaders from Cambodia and Thailand are set for peace talks today. The US has already sent mediators for the truce.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that the US President has claimed brokering peace between India and Pakistan. Indian leadership has repeatedly denied any American mediation. On Friday, India’s Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan had said that “Operation Sindoor still continues.”
