Hours after the FBI raided the home and office of former National Security Advisor John Bolton, US President Donald Trump insisted he had no prior knowledge of the operation.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to the Kennedy Center in Washington on Friday, Trump said he only learned about the search when it was reported on television. “I saw it on television this morning,” The Guardian quoted Trump as saying.

Although Trump reiterated his disdain for his former aide, he distanced himself from the raid. “I’m not a fan of John Bolton. He’s a real sort of a lowlife,” Trump said, adding: “He’s not a smart guy. But he could be very unpatriotic. I’m going to find out.”

Trump further claimed he prefers not to be briefed on such operations beforehand. “I tell the group I don’t want to know, but just -- you have to do what you have to do. I don’t want to know about it,” he said. He also noted that he expects to be briefed soon by the Justice Department.
