Leland Mayor John Lee told CBS News that the shooting occurred around midnight on the city’s main street, where crowds had gathered for Leland High School’s homecoming weekend. Four of the critically injured victims were airlifted to nearby hospitals for emergency care, though their conditions have not been immediately disclosed.

The mass shooting took place shortly after a football game in Leland, a small city approximately 120 miles (190 km) northeast of Jackson, the state capital, according to the BBC. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the events that led to the deadly outbreak of gunfire.
