A recent video released by state broadcaster CCTV showcased the upgraded robots, an advancement from previous robotic dog models, designed to replace human soldiers in hazardous situations and minimize combat casualties.
In the exercises featured on Chinese state media, these robotic canines operated alongside dismounted PLA infantry, navigating rough terrain and engaging simulated enemy targets.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), the latest generation of robowolves, quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicles, is significantly more advanced than previous models.
Heavier, smarter, and better equipped for combat, these robots are capable of navigating complex terrain and executing precision strikes from distances of up to 100 meters (328 feet).
CCTV also reported that the robowolves are armed with assault rifles and are capable of working in coordinated formations, mirroring real wolf packs by taking on different roles such as scouts, shooters, or ammunition carriers.
These robotic units were first unveiled to the public in November 2024 during a military drill involving two infantry companies from the PLA’s 76th Group Army.
As noted by the Global Times, this exercise featured a coordinated operation between soldiers, robowolves, and first-person view (FPV) drones.
The robowolves carried out precision strikes and offered cover support during simulated maneuvers through rugged, hilly terrain.
A Chinese military analyst told the Global Times that these ground-based robotic systems may ultimately surpass drones in battlefield impact.
He emphasized the psychological effect of confronting mechanical adversaries, stating, “even if you manage to destroy some units, more could keep advancing,” a scenario that could wear down opposing forces mentally and emotionally.
