Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described US President Donald Trump’s suggestion for Ukraine and Russia to hold their positions at the current frontlines as “a good compromise,” while expressing doubts that Russian President Vladimir Putin would agree, Reuters reported.
Speaking during his visit to Nordic countries, Zelenskyy said Trump had proposed: “Stay where we stay and begin conversation.”
“I think that was a good compromise, but I’m not sure that Putin will support it, and I said it to the president,” Zelenskyy added.
Trump has urged both Ukraine and Russia to halt fighting and begin talks based on their current frontlines, amid stalled international efforts to end the war.
On Tuesday, Trump announced he was postponing plans for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, saying he did not want a “wasted" meeting. Despite this, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Wednesday that preparations for a summit between the two leaders are continuing.
The summit postponement came after a phone call between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Despite Trump’s announcement that the meeting had been put on hold, Russia and Hungary continue to confirm that the planned summit in Budapest, originally aimed at discussing the conflict in Ukraine, is still in progress, AFP reported.
"We are saying that preparations for a summit are continuing," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also stated that preparations for the Trump–Putin meeting in Budapest are ongoing, according to Reuters.
