Must-read books by Ruskin Bond

One of India’s most beloved authors, Ruskin Bond, turned 90 on May 19. The author, who has written over 500 short stories, essays and novels, was born on this day in 1934.

On this special occasion, let’s take a look at some of Bond’s best works for which he is known the world over.

His first book, The Room on the Roof won him the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1957 and is still regarded as one of the best books by the author.

A collection of 14 stories from Bond’s life, Our Tress Still Grow in Dehra is among the top novels by the author. One of the stories, A Flight of Pigeons, was adapted into a Bollywood film, “Junoon”.

The Blue Umbrella by Bond was published in 1974 and was later adapted into a film by the same name directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. It even won the National Award for Best Children’s Film.

For all the ghost story lovers out there, Bond wrote a book called Ghost Stories from the Raj, a collection of 19 short stories, some of them allegedly based on true events.

Rusty The Boy from the Hills is a heartfelt story about an Anglo-Indian boy named Rusty living in pre-Independence Dehradun with his grandparents. It is a great fiction novel for children and adults alike.

Susanna’s Seven Husbands was written as a 5-page short story but was developed into a full-fledged novel by Bond. It was also adapted into a Bollywood film, “7 Khoon Maaf”, by Vishal Bhardwaj.
