Background of World Wildlife Day

• On December 20, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) formally established March 3 as UN World Wildlife Day under Resolution A/RES/68/205.
• The CITES Secretariat (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) was designated as the global coordinator for the event.
• March 3 was chosen as it marks the signing of the 1973 CITES Convention, a landmark agreement aimed at ensuring the survival of endangered species by regulating their international trade.
• First proposed by Thailand, World Wildlife Day was later adopted by the UNGA.
