Kashmir enters its 40-day Chillai Kalan, the harshest winter phase, with temperatures dropping below freezing, turning the Valley into a snow-covered paradise.

Srinagar recorded its coldest December night in 50 years, with temperatures plummeting to minus 8.5°C on the night of December 20, 2024, setting the stage for stunning winter landscapes.

Konibal, near Pampore town, recorded a frigid minus 10.5°C, becoming the coldest spot in Kashmir during Chillai Kalan’s extreme winter chill.

Other parts of Kashmir, like Qazigund (-8.2°C), Kupwara (-7.2°C), and Kokernag (-5.8°C), also experienced severe cold, marking one of the coldest winters in decades.

Snow is expected in higher reaches from December 27-28, transforming Kashmir into a winter wonderland, perfect for winter sports and photographers.

Chillai Kalan will conclude on January 31, but the cold will persist in the valley, transitioning into the 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) followed by the 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold).
