Parody accounts, often created to mimic public figures or organizations for comedic or satirical purposes, have sometimes been mistaken for authentic sources, leading to confusion and, in some cases, the spread of misinformation. X (formerly Twitter) has introduced specific labels for parody accounts on its platform.

The new labeling system will require parody account holders to explicitly identify themselves as such in their account names and bios. To further enhance clarity, X will add a visible label to these accounts, ensuring users can recognise their nature.

“We’re rolling out profile labels for parody accounts to clearly distinguish these types of accounts and their content on our platform. We designed these labels to increase transparency and to ensure that users are not deceived into thinking such accounts belong to the entity being parodied,” X’s Safety team said.

Currently, users can voluntarily add the label to their profiles on X’s settings page. However, the platform intends to make these labels mandatory for parody, commentary, and fan (PCF) accounts in the future.

X also said that users cannot use manufactured identities to engage in disruptive or deceptive behavior. This may include using stock, stolen or AI-generated profile photos, copied or stolen profile bios, and/or misleading profile information for the purpose of deceiving others.
