WhatsApp has announced new updates to improve its calling experience, bringing features that make group calls more organized and interactive. The new options include call scheduling, participant previews, call links, and interactive participation tools. The changes are aimed at improving accessibility and inclusivity across both personal and professional settings.

Group call scheduling

One of the major additions is the ability to schedule group calls directly within chat threads. Once a call is scheduled, it appears in the chat window, and participants receive reminders when the call is about to begin. This update makes it easier for families, friends, work teams, and community groups to plan their calls in advance, similar to the scheduling options already seen on platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

How to schedule a WhatsApp call

To plan a call in advance, users can follow these steps:

1. Open the Calls tab in the WhatsApp app.

2. Tap the + button in the top-right corner.

3. Select “Schedule call.”

4. Choose the people or group you want to invite.

5. Set the date and time for the call.

6. Confirm the schedule. The call will now appear in the chat, and all participants will receive reminders before it begins.

Call links and participant preview

WhatsApp has also rolled out a call link feature. Users can generate a link for an upcoming or ongoing call and share it with others. This makes it convenient for people who need to join late without disturbing ongoing conversations. In addition, the participant preview option lets users see who is already on the call before joining. This transparency is especially useful in professional or large group settings where deciding when to join matters.

Interactive features during calls

To improve engagement, WhatsApp has added interactive tools for participants. Users can raise their hand to indicate they want to speak, helping avoid interruptions in group discussions. Reactions can also be sent during calls, allowing people to express responses without breaking the flow of the conversation.

Security and availability

All the new features continue to be protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. They are being rolled out globally and will be available on Android, iOS, and desktop apps. Users can expect to see them gradually as part of the latest updates.
