Joaquin Oliver was just 17 when he was killed in the tragic 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. This year, on what would have been his 25th birthday, Joaquin appeared once again this time, as an AI-generated version of himself, speaking in an emotional interview with journalist Jim Acosta, as per a report by RollingStone
The conversation aired on Acosta’s Substack on August 4. Using an AI model trained on Joaquin’s writings, posts, and memories shared by his family, the digital version of Joaquin answered questions, expressed thoughts on gun violence, and even talked about his favorite movies and basketball.
“I believe in a mix of stronger gun control laws, mental health support, and community engagement,” the AI Joaquin said when asked about ways to curb gun violence. “We need to create safe spaces for conversations and connections, making everyone feel seen and heard.”
The AI wasn’t just a chatbot. Viewers saw an animated photo of Joaquin, complete with moving lips and small facial gestures, giving the interview an eerie but touching sense of realism.
Joaquin’s father, Manuel Oliver, was also part of the interview. He explained that the AI wasn’t meant to replace his son, but to keep his voice alive — literally. “I understand that this is AI,” he said. “I don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to bring my son back. Sadly, I can’t. I wish I could.”
For Manuel and his wife Patricia, hearing Joaquin’s voice again is deeply meaningful. “Patricia will spend hours asking questions,” Manuel shared. “Like any other mother, she loves to hear Joaquin saying, ‘I love you, mommy.’ And that’s important.”
The project also has a larger purpose as per his father and that is to raise awareness about gun safety. Manuel says Joaquin’s AI will now continue to “upload videos” and “gain followers,” adding his voice to the national conversation around gun reform.
This isn’t the first time AI has been used in memory of Joaquin. Last year, his voice was part of The Shotline, a campaign where AI-generated messages from gun violence victims were sent directly to lawmakers.
For the Olivers, this technology is one way to ensure their son’s story, and his message, never fades.
