While the emergence of DeepSeek has sent ripples across the tech industry, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t seem overtly concerned. During an investors’ call after Meta reported its quarterly earnings, Zuckerberg was posed a lot of questions about the Chinese AI startup and its threat.
The Meta CEO said that DeepSeek has done “a number of novel things”, which “we’re still digesting”. He also said that Meta has plans to implement DeepSeek’s advancements into its own Llama model.
He also stressed on setting a open source standard for artificial intelligence. “I just think in light of some of the recent news, you know, the new competitor, DeepSeek from China ... one of the things that we're talking about is there's going to be an open source standard globally. And I think for our, kind of national advantage, it's important that it's an American standard,” he said.
Zuckerberg also said that Meta wants to build the AI system that people around the world are using. “And I think that, if anything, some of the recent news has only strengthened our conviction that this is the right thing for us to be focused on,” Zuckerberg noted.
DeepSeek’s rise has come at significantly less cost. But Zuckerberg said that he isn’t concerned about spending too much money on development of AI models and GPUs. “I continue to think that investing very heavily in CapEx and infra is going to be a strategic advantage over time,” he told investors.
