Google Chrome for Android has been working on the Text to Speech (TTS) functionality in the last few months, which converts text into natural-sounding speech using an API, with the help of generative AI. Now, Google is rolling out a ‘Listen to this page’ feature that can read an entire webpage from the Google Chrome app.
As reported by 9to5Google, this feature is currently available on Chrome for Android version 125 and is expected to be released for all stable users in the coming weeks. You need to tap on the ‘Listen to this page’ option, users need to click on the three-dot menu on the Chrome Android app, just below the Translate option.
With this feature, you can listen to the entire page with certain media controls also available. Further, the media player can play, pause, fast forward up to 4x, or skip or rewind ten seconds, and even change the preferred voice. Google has currently provided four different voice patterns to choose from, including Ruby (mid-pitch, warm), River (mid-pitch, bright), Field (low-pitch, bright), and Moss (low-pitch, peaceful).
For the English language, Google has provided support for four different accents, which include the United States, Indian, Australian, and United Kingdom. In addition, the new feature is available in other regional and international languages, such as Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
However, Google has also notified on its support page, that this feature isn’t available on all web pages, and on these websites, the Listen to this page option won’t appear in the overflow menu.
