Google brings new design to Pixel Camera, smart FPS control to older Pixels
Google is rolling out Pixel Camera 10.1 to older Pixel models via the Play Store. First seen on the Pixel 10 series, the update introduces a refreshed Material 3 Expressive design and a new Optimise FPS mode that dynamically switches frame rates during video recording for smoother, more efficient performance. The update also simplifies the camera’s settings layout.
Material 3 Expressive redesign arrives on older Pixels Pixel Camera 10.1 embraces Google’s latest Material 3 Expressive aesthetic. The update modernises the app with softer shapes, refined typography, and cleaner iconography. Google has also toned down Dynamic Colour theming, resulting in a more consistent, minimal interface across all camera modes.
Shutter and UI animations get a visual refresh The shutter button now appears as a solid circle bordered by a translucent ring, while adjacent controls take on rounded-square shapes. The preview of the last captured photo now features a lively animation reminiscent of classic photo booths, adding a touch of personality to the interface.
Cleaner, more readable layout Font sizes have been slightly increased for better legibility, particularly in zoom shortcuts and settings panels. The new design language makes key controls easier to spot while maintaining a polished, balanced look across the app.
Simplified and reorganised settings Google has restructured the Camera Settings page into clearly defined categories like General, Composition, Fast Access, Photo, Video, and Advanced Capture. The “More settings” option now appears as an ellipsis icon at the top-right corner, optimised for one-handed navigation.
Streamlined experience and gradual rollout Google has scrapped the old “Advanced” menu in favour of one unified settings page that groups related options logically. Pixel Camera 10.1 is rolling out in phases via the Play Store, already available on Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro, with manual sideloading an option for eager users.
