Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group has given a preview of its latest AI reasoning model, QwQ-Max, which aims to compete with rivals like DeepSeek's R1 and OpenAI's o1. According to a report by South China Morning Post, the QwQ-Max-Preview model is built on the advanced Qwen 2.5-Max, introduced last month. According to Alibaba, the new model demonstrates stronger and more versatile reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Alibaba's QwQ-Max-Preview is designed to replicate human-like thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving. The company aims to democratise AI by making its models accessible to a broader audience. The Qwen team has indicated that the full version of QwQ-Max will be made open source upon its official release

“We are committed to democratising access to advanced reasoning capabilities and fostering innovation across diverse applications,” said Alibaba in a statement. The preview model is available for free on the Qwen chatbot website. The company has confirmed that a mobile app for the chatbot will be coming soon.

The preview of the new model comes after Alibaba's recent announcement of a substantial investment in AI infrastructure. The company has pledged to invest $53 billion over the next three years to enhance its cloud and AI capabilities. This investment is the largest computing project ever financed by a single private business in China, as per the report.

The introduction of QwQ-Max-Preview is expected to intensify competition in the AI market, particularly in China. Local companies and government agencies are increasingly adopting AI technologies, with DeepSeek's open-source R1 model gaining significant traction.
