Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek issues apology after cap snatching act at US Open

Piotr Szczerek, the CEO of the Polish asphalt company Drogbruk, has issued an unconditional apology after a video of him snatching an autographed cap from a kid went viral on social media. The incident took place at the end of a second-round US Open match while Kamil Majchrzak, Poland’s No 2-ranked men’s player, was handing over autographs and souvenirs to fans present at the stadium.

Szczerek shared a lengthy note on Drogbruk's Instagram account in Polish conveying the same. He also clarified the statements by him, his wife, or his sons available on social media as hoax.

Commenting further on the matter, Szczerek stated that he and his wife have dedicated many years in helping young athletes and noted that this one moment has ruined all his efforts. However, he takes it as a lesson in humility and vowed to engage more in initiatives supporting children and adolescents.

Meanwhile, Majchrzak met the young boy who was robbed of the souvenir. Majchrzak got to know about the incident only after the video went viral and appealed on social media to help him contact the boy. His message was eventually delivered and the tennis player also shared a photo shaking hands with the young fan, named only as Brock, on Instagram.

"Hello World, together with Brock we wish you a great day!" the tennis player's caption said.

Majchrzak's campaign at US Open

Majchrzak, ranked 79, defeated Bolivian Hugo Dellien in his opening round tie at Flushing Meadows. He then rallied from two sets down to script a huge upset in the next round as he defeated ninth-seed Karen Khachanov. However, his campaign came to an abrupt end in the third round as he retired hurt midway during the first set against Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi.
