The recent T20I series in Sri Lanka not only marked the beginning of Gautam Gambhir's coaching tenure with India but also signalled Suryakumar Yadav's role as the permanent captain in the shortest format. Both Gambhir and Suryakumar had reason to celebrate as they enjoyed a perfect start with a 3-0 whitewash of the Sri Lankan team.
With full support from Gambhir, Suryakumar, one of the most explosive batters in T20s, excelled as captain. The 33-year-old demonstrated his ability to think outside the box, which was pivotal in securing an unlikely victory in the third and final match.
According to Suryakumar, Gambhir's approach of granting a "free hand" to the team is allowing players to express themselves freely. "The way Gambhir played his cricket for India was exceptional. He understands each player's game and knows what they prefer doing on the field and during practice sessions," said Suryakumar, who is currently in Coimbatore representing Mumbai in a Buchi Babu tournament Group C match against TNCA XI.
"He has given everyone a free hand. As a team, it’s crucial to share all the ideas players have. We will consider them, go out and be ourselves."
While Suryakumar has been a cornerstone of India’s T20I batting line-up over the past three and a half years, he has yet to secure a regular spot in the Test squad. His only Test appearance was against Australia in Nagpur in February 2023.
Nevertheless, Suryakumar is determined to earn his place in the red-ball format. "There are many players who have worked hard to secure their spots in the Test squad, and I want to be among them. After my debut in Tests, I got injured. The players who have been given opportunities have performed well, and they deserve their chance right now," he said.
Suryakumar emphasised that red-ball cricket has always been his top "priority" since he began playing for his state team. "My passion for red-ball cricket has always been strong. Even though I made my debut for India in the shorter formats first, I have always enjoyed playing Test cricket. Red-ball cricket has always been my primary focus. That’s why I am here ahead of the Duleep Trophy," he added.
"This format is a bit more challenging; you have to stay ahead of the game. You cannot bat the same way as in a T20 match. However, intent is crucial. Your body language on the field is important. If you perform well, stay humble. If not, return to the basics, reassess, and come back stronger."
