The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dismissed all rumours around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma coming out of Test retirement. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia commenting on the subject told AajTak: “What’s being said about Virat Kohli is just a rumour. There has been no conversation with Kohli about this. Do not give weight to rumours. Nothing of that sort has happened.”
Earlier, former England all-rounder Kevin Pietersen in a post on X raised eyebrows around the possible return of India's premier batters in the traditional format of the game. "I don't always believe what I read in the media or on social media. But, if it's half true that both Virat and Rohit are considering playing Test cricket again, then it needs to be taken very very seriously. The survival of Test cricket is a hot topic of conversation and if the biggest stars in the game are wanting to play it again, they must play," he wrote.
Team India suffered a 0-2 drubbing at home in the Test series against South Africa last week. Since then, there have been rumours that the BCCI has asked Sharma and Kohli to come out of their Test retirements.
Both Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from the longest format in May this year. Kohli scored 9230 runs in 123 Test matches at an average of 46.85. Rohit, on the other hand, amassed 4301 runs in 67 Tests at an average of 40.57.
Apart from Test, the Indian legends also stepped away from T20Is, which was right after the country won the World Cup held last year in the USA and Caribbean islands.
Rohit and Kohli, however, remain active in ODIs and have expressed strong desire to take part in the next edition of the World Cup slated to be played in South Africa in 2027. BCCI, however, are non-committal about their participation in the showpiece event.
