The Asia Cup 2025 drama continues to develop as Team India refused to collect the winner's trophy and medals from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the interior minister of the country and head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The Men In Blue maintained their cold stance towards Pakistan throughout the continental event, which also marked the first meeting between the arch-rivals post the Pahalgam terror attack.
Naqvi's strong anti-India stance saw the champions refrain from any engagement with the official, leading to yet another controversy in the tournament. It was reported that Naqvi took the Asia Cup trophy with him post India's refusal. And now it is learnt that Naqvi have informed the tournament organisers that a formal function be arranged where he hands over the trophy and medals to the victorious Indian squad.
The development was reported by Cricbuzz, which also mentioned that any such function is highly unlikely to occur.
Meanwhile, the BCCI will lodge a "very strong protest" in the next ICC meeting in November against Naqvi.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia justified the team's refusal saying that India cannot accept the trophy from a person who is "waging a war against the country".
"This is unexpected, very childish in nature and we will launch a very strong protest with ICC in the forthcoming ICC meeting to be held in Dubai in the first week of November," he was quoted as saying by PTI.
India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final on Sunday with Tilak Varma hitting an unbeaten 69 to be adjudged the Player of the Match for the summit clash.
Saikia said beating Pakistan across three games of this Asia Cup will bring "happiness to our people".
"Today, with this handsome win over Pakistan and the thumping victory of 3-0, I am sure we will bring a lot of happiness to our people. The country is really proud of the performance of Indian cricket team," he said.
