What is Vaikasi Visakam?

This is a spiritually significant day as it marks the divine incarnation of Lord Murugan, the warrior son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is known by many names including Lord Senthil, Kumaran, Arumugam, and Shanmugam.

Lord Murugan 

Lord Murugan, also revered as Arumugam (the six-faced one), is believed to have a divine vision in all six directions – East, West, North, South, Heaven, and Patala (Netherworld). This symbolizes his omnipresence and his role as a protector and guide to his devotees.

On Vaikasi Visakam, devotees perform special Abhishekams (ritual bathing) using milk and water in Murugan temples, especially in Tamil Nadu. The milk Abhishekam is a symbolic purification and offering of devotion to Lord Murugan.
