Haridwar, Uttarakhand [India], May 26: Thousands of devotees gathered at the sacred ghats of Haridwar on Monday morning to take a holy dip in the river Ganga on the auspicious occasion of Somvati Amavasya 2025. The day, steeped in Hindu spiritual significance, witnessed a large turnout of pilgrims performing rituals for the peace of their ancestors and the attainment of divine blessings.
Importance of Somvati Amavasya
Somvati Amavasya, a rare occurrence when Amavasya (new moon) falls on a Monday, holds deep religious and astrological importance in Hindu traditions. On this day, devotees believe that taking a dip in sacred rivers like the Ganga helps in washing away sins, attaining Punya (spiritual merit), and resolving ancestral debts, also known as Pitru Dosha.
The ghats of Haridwar were filled with chants, offerings, and the sound of temple bells, as pilgrims engaged in acts of charity, Havan, Pitra Tarpan, and prayers to honour their forefathers.
Devotees Share Spiritual Experiences
Pilgrims from across the country—Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, and beyond—came to participate in this spiritual gathering. Ashwini Kumar from Delhi shared, “We come here often, and whenever we do, we make it a point to bathe multiple times in the Ganga. It’s a deeply spiritual feeling—the atmosphere is very sacred.” Umesh Kaushik, who travelled with his friends from Haryana, said, “Today is Somvati Amavasya, and this is a very auspicious Nakshatra. We feel blessed to bathe in the Ganga on such a powerful day.”
Rama Padmani from Surat, Gujarat, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to offer prayers. “I came here to pray for the well-being of all Indians. The Aarti was divine, and the energy here brings immense peace,” she said.
Rituals Performed on Somvati Amavasya
Devotees observed traditional practices including:
- Snan (ritual bath) in the Ganga
- Pitra Tarpan for ancestors
- Charity (daan) of food and clothes
- Feeding cows and animals
- Chanting of mantras and recitation of scriptures
These acts are believed to bring peace to ancestral souls, eliminate Pitru Dosha, and usher in prosperity and mental peace.
Situated on the banks of the Ganga in Uttarakhand, Haridwar is one of the seven holiest cities in Hinduism. It plays a central role during festivals like Somvati Amavasya, Kumbh Mela, and Ganga Dussehra. The city’s spiritual aura, especially during such auspicious occasions, draws lakhs of pilgrims every year.
Spiritual and Astrological Significance
According to Hindu astrology, Somvati Amavasya is ideal for performing ancestral rituals and initiating acts of spiritual cleansing. Bathing in the Ganga on this day is said to bring moksha (liberation) to ancestors and uplift the devotee spiritually. Astrologers also suggest that this is a favourable time to begin new ventures, seek blessings for marriage, and resolve Karmic debts through righteous acts.
Somvati Amavasya 2025 brought together thousands of devotees in Haridwar, united by faith and the quest for spiritual merit. The sacred dip in the Ganga River, prayers for ancestors, and rituals performed with devotion marked the day with holiness, harmony, and divine energy.
