Rajya Sabha MP and renowned philanthropist Sudha Murty expressed her deep sense of joy and excitement upon arriving at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The event, which she described as a spiritual experience like no other, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
Speaking about her visit, Murty said, "I am very excited because this is 'Teerthraj.' The Maha Kumbh happens once in 144 years, and being here fills me with hope and immense happiness." She is on a three-day trip to take part in this historic festival.
Sudha Murty, an acclaimed author in both English and Kannada literature, is well-known for her contributions to social work. She was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2023 and the Padma Shri in 2006. Murty retired as the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation in 2021 and is married to NR Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys. She is also the mother-in-law of former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The Maha Kumbh began on January 13, 2025, and has since seen a steady influx of pilgrims. As of January 20, over 87.9 million devotees have taken the holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati at Triveni Sangam. On the eighth day alone, 5.33 million devotees participated in the sacred ritual.
To ensure the safety of millions of visitors, over 10,000 personnel from the Uttar Pradesh Police, paramilitary forces, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed. Additionally, water ambulances have been stationed at the Sangam to handle any emergencies.
The Maha Kumbh is not only a testament to India’s spiritual traditions but also showcases the impeccable planning and arrangements made to accommodate one of the largest gatherings of humanity. Sudha Murty’s presence adds a note of inspiration to this grand event, as devotees from across the globe come together in pursuit of spiritual renewal.
