The day of Guru Purnima, also known as Ashadha Purnima, holds deep spiritual importance in Hinduism. On this day, Purnima Vrat, Chandra Puja, and Guru worship are observed to receive divine blessings. According to ancient scriptures like Bhavishya Purana, this full moon is ideal for fasting, moon worship, and seeking knowledge and peace.

On Ashadha Purnima, devotees rise early and perform a sacred bath (snan), ideally in a holy river. This act purifies the body and soul and prepares one for the Purnima Upavasa (fasting ritual). For those at home, bathing with water mixed with Gangajal is recommended. According to Bhavishya Purana, the Dvatrimshi Purnima Vrat (observed on 32 full moons) brings happiness, good fortune, children, and spiritual growth.
Purnima Vrat Sankalp and Puja Vidhi (Rituals)
After bathing, devotees take a Sankalp (vow) for the Purnima fast:
- Kalash Sthapana and worship of Lord Ganesha
- Shodashopachara Puja for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
- Worship of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Chandra
- Chanting mantras, bhajans, and spiritual reading
- Offering Arghya to the moon at moonrise (7:20 PM)
- Reciting or listening to the Purnima Vrat Katha
- Optional: Performing the Satyanarayana Vrat Katha in the evening
Food choices during Purnima Vrat depend on regional traditions, but typically include:
- Fruits, milk, and satvik meals
- Many devotees observe nirjala vrat (water-only fast)
- Grains, salt, spices, tea, coffee, and tobacco are avoided
To complete the Purnima Vrat, Udyapana is done on a future Purnima (Jyeshtha or any other auspicious full moon). Here's a brief overview:

- Perform detailed worship with 16 steps (Shodashopachara)

- Next morning, conduct a Havan using the Shiva Panchakshara Mantra with 108 oblations
- Offer a special donation: 32 fruits, ghee lamp, rice, and clothes
- Feed 32 Brahmins and women with six types of dishes
- If possible, donate a cow and calf; else offer the best you can
- Conclude with Purnahuti, and the remaining prasad can be consumed
- Observing the Purnima fast and performing Chandra Puja:
- Removes sins and purifies the mind
- Brings peace, prosperity, and family harmony
- Strengthens mental clarity and emotional balance
- Enhances inner devotion and earns divine blessings from Lord Chandra, Shiva, and Vishnu
