Russia announced a record number of new infections on October 30 before a “nonworking week” that authorities hope will slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Authorities reported 40,251 new infections in the preceding 24 hours, a record, and 1,160 deaths. More than 237,380 have died of COVID-19.

Moscow, with 7,267 new infections in the past 24 hours, has been an epicentre of the pandemic. The city began a light lockdown two days earlier. Schools, kindergartens, nonessential shops, restaurants, bars and gyms are closed, while museums and theatres remain open at 50 percent capacity.
