The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic has spread across 180 countries. Today is the 10th day of India's 21-day lockdown. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India stands at 2,301. The Union Health Ministry has said that 56 people have died due to the virus.
PM Narendra Modi thanked the people of India for showing phenomenal discipline during the 21-day lockdown to control the spread of coronavirus. To defeat the darkness of despair and light our lives with hope, let's switch off all lights for 9 minutes at 9 pm on April 5 and illuminate our surroundings with candles, diyas, torch or mobile flashlights, says the PM.

Of this, Mumbai alone has reported 43 fresh cases, taking the total number of cases to 278 in the financial capital of India.

The Capital Complex administration has quarantined 24 persons, who attended the congregation at Nizamuddin in Delhi in March, after a returnee of the Tablighi Jamaat event tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, said an official. The 24 persons and their family members have been quarantined, Capital Complex Deputy Commissioner Komkar Dulom said. A red alert has been sounded across the state after a person, a resident of Medo village in Lohit district, who had attended the Jamaat event tested COVID-19 positive. Andhra Pradesh confirms first death due to coronarvirus in the state. A 55-year-old man died on March 30. He had a medical history of diabetes and heart disease. His son had gone to Delhi and returned to Vijayawada on March 17, he too was tested positive for COVID-19. The delay in identifying the reason for his death is due to his health record. Pakistan has estimated that up to 18.5 million people in the country could lose their jobs and the economy will sustain a loss of nearly Rs 2.5 trillion in three months due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a media report. Cyber security watchdog CERT-In has alerted people about fake UPI IDs similar to that of PM-CARES Fund and appealed to all to check the authenticity of the original ID before donating. The IDs have been created on UPI handle of Indian banks including PNB, HDFC Bank, SBI, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, to mislead people. The “longer range” of lifting the restrictions was a result of expected challenges in India due to health system preparedness and record of public policy effectiveness, said the study by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

There has been a steep rise in COVID-19 cases in Uttar Pradesh with at least 46 fresh cases being reported in the last 24 hours, taking to 172 the total number of coronavirus patients in the state till today, a senior health official said. The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in UP was reported to be 126 on Thursday night.
"Till Friday afternoon the total number of positive COVID-19 cases across the state are 172," a senior health official told PTI.
The sharp increase in the number of cases, officials said, was due to confirmation of coronavirus in the samples of over three dozen people across the state who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi.

The Supreme Court today sought response from the Centre on a plea filed by two civil rights activists seeking enforcement of the fundamental right to life for migrant workers and payment of wages to them as they have been left without work or food following the 21-day nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic.
