An Epic app that connects a donor with charity organisations

Epic Foundation is a bridge that connects donors with charity organisations and its founder entrepreneur and philanthropist Alexander Mars goes about doing it through his app.

It shouldn't all be about profits for a company. It should also be giving a little something back to the society. In this context, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has grown to be a massive movement. In India, there is even a mandate that requires companies to part with 2 percent of their net-profit towards charities of all kind. And companies like Wipro, largely through the personal efforts of its chief Azim Premji, has given the movement a shot in the arm.

However, there is still a long way to go.

"With almost 300 million underprivileged children, India is [socially] light years behind," says entrepreneur and philanthropist Alexandre Mars. He would know. His mother’s involvement in social work gave him the idea 'to protect people’’ and drove him to build an app-based donation site Epic Foundation.

Epic is a bridge that connects donors with charity organisations. Mars goes about doing it through his app. A donor logs on to the app and sifts through the list of charity organisations featured on it and picks one to donate. The app also allows the donor to track his money and participate in the experience of giving in real-time.

"The donors are connected with organisations through this system where they can fetch all information related to their accounts."

Calling monopoly his only unique selling price (USP), he says there is a severe dearth of 'giving' initiatives and in light of this he wouldn't mind marrying other non-profit organisations with Epic or even having franchisees. "India has many organisations whom we are trying to get to use our technology and innovation," Mars added.

While culturally the US is a 'giver', India's corporates are slowly becoming a part of the charity movement, too, he said. However, there is still a funding gap that needs to be bridged – many more corporates and HNIs will have to jump in. Mars is of the view that once peer-pressure is developed, the act of donating will become a habit.

His self-funded and non-profit app isn't just for the well-heeled people to make contributions, but for anyone and everyone who wants to donate in whatever manner possible. "If she [waitress serving us] wants to donate Rs 25, she should be able to," he said.

It is important to note that not every company is willingly contributing to social causes. A few count it as a hit on their profits. For CSR to turn into a fully-matured movement there is a need for introducing the concept of selfless giving at an early stage for budding high net-worth individuals (HNIs).
