Music icon Ed Sheeran surprised a few unsuspecting fans at London’s Leicester Square recently when he presented himself as an avatar and interacted with them.

In a video shared by the 30-year-old British music sensation in collaboration with social media publisher LADBible, a person wearing a black outfit from head to toe, with their head covered with a tablet is seen standing in the middle of Leicester Square on a busy day.

The person then approach different pairs of people. Ed Sheeran, who is sitting in a studio and monitoring the streets, instructs the person to stop before specific persons.

He first asks the “avatar man” to approach two girls who they thinks “might have heard” his songs. When the person is black greets them, the unsuspecting girls, confused, ask them who they are and if the voice they were hearing is from the person in black or if it was coming from the tablet attached. After a couple of wrong guesses (Tom Holland and Harry Styles), one of the girls unsurely says it could be Ed Sheeran.

A second later, a face appears on the tablet screen. The reaction of the girls is priceless as they stand in disbelief on seeing Ed Sheeran talking to them from the screen. When a producer told them that they can ask the singer one question, one of the girls asked him about the most embarrassing moment in his life.

“Probably in primary school, when I was, like, eight or nine, pi**ing myself. I can still remember it,” he says.

Ed Sheeran then asks the person in black to walk straight and stop before two children. Before revealing his identity, he said he is from a radio station and requested them to sing any of his songs. The children then sing a few lines from his song, “Photograph”.

Sheeran joins them in the singing and switches on the tablet camera, taking his young fans by complete surprise. The boy asked him if he is dressing up for Halloween.

“I think I will dress up for Halloween, yeah. There is a programme called ‘Squid Game’, and I want to go as one of the guards from that because there’s just a mask that they wear.”

A man standing behind the person in black overalls holds up a banner that says, “Come and talk to a celebrity”.

Sheeran similarly approaches more people and gives them a surprise. He tested positive for coronavirus last week and is in isolation.

His fourth studio album, "=", releases today. This is his first full solo album since 2017’s blockbuster “Divide”.
