A man who never when to a university turned his luck around after landing a job at Deloitte as a partner. Ben Newton from the United Kingdom joined the company through its apprenticeship scheme, Brightstart, 12 years ago. He became a partner just last year and now earns a whopping one million pounds which is approximately over Rs 10 crore.

As per reports, Newton also became the first partner from Deloitte Brightstart’s apprentice programme for school dropouts. “I grew up in Dorset. My dad left school at 16 and was a soldier in the army. My mum worked in a pub and then a travel agent. It was an upbringing far removed from London and the world of finance,” the 30-year-old told Sunday Times.

Newton was also the first person from his family to receive an acceptance letter from a university. He was granted an offer to study Maths at the University of Warwick. But, he decided to join the Brightstart program so that he could earn some money. He is now qualified as an accountant and works as an auditor, Sunday Times reported.

“I got a place at Warwick University to study Maths, which I was looking forward to. But that summer, I was working a couple of jobs to save money and decided to research grad schemes to work out what I might want to do after uni. I came across the option of school-leaver schemes and decided, for good practice, to apply to some of them - with no intention of deviating from my path,” Newton said.

Newton mentioned that he landed a few interviews but decided to go with Deloitte. “I knew I wanted a similar role after university and I'm a bit impatient, so I took the job. I love learning and I know I'd have loved the social side of university, and I do wonder what would have happened if I had taken that route. But on balance, when I look back, it still feels like the right decision,” he added.

Meanwhile, Deloitte launched the Brightstart apprenticeship programme to encourage more people to join the company. It also wanted to hire more individuals and provide them with an alternative to college.
