Lionel Messi (Argentina) | The ‘Golden Ball’ winner in the previous World Cup, Messi was not a happy man picking up the award as his team had just lost the final to Germany courtesy a Mario Gotze goal in the second half of extra time. Messi would love lifting the World Cup more than anything else and he knows that scoring goals can only take him closer to that dream. (Image: Reuters)

Neymar Jr. (Brazil) | Neymar had scored four goals from just five matches before his 2014 World Cup was cut short due a fractured vertebra after Columbia’s Juan Zuniga kneed him in the back during Brazil’s quarter final win. Neymar comes into the tournament after a good first season with new club Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 28 goals from 30 games. He will be looking to avenge the 7-1 drubbing that Brazil suffered in his absence against Germany in the 2014 semi-finals. (Image: Reuters)

Thomas Mueller (Germany) | Although not an out-and-out striker, Mueller is the highest goalscorer among all players currently participating in the World Cup. He has 10 goals from his previous two World Cups and could well usurp his compatriot Miroslav Klose as the all-time top scorer if he can manage seven or more goals in Russia. (Image: Reuters)

Robert Lewandowski (Poland) | Lewandowski capped another fine season with Bayen Munich, finishing as the top scorer this season with 29 goals. He was also the top goalscorer in Europe for the qualifying stages with 16 goals for Poland. A proven goalscorer, Lewandowski could just finish as the top scorer on the world stage too.
