Karim Benzema (France) | After lifting his third Champions League trophy in as many years, Benzema was once again overlooked when it came to picking France’s national squad. Benzema last featured for France in October 2015 and was frozen out of the squad following numerous run-ins with the French Football association, the latest being his alleged involvement in a blackmail attempt against former French team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

Alvaro Morata (Spain) | Chelsea’s big money summer signing will not feature for ‘La Roja’ in Russia this summer following a disappointing first season in the Premier League. Morata managed just 11 goals and six assists after 31 appearances for Chelsea this season and later even lost his place to January signing Olivier Giroud.

Mauro Icardi (Argentina) | Inter Milan captain Icardi, who scored 29 goals from just 34 games this season in the Serie A, was left out of the Argentina squad by Jorge Sampaoli. Icardi hasn’t featured much for the national side after he courted controversy by marrying former teammate Maxi Lopez’s ex-wife Wanda Nara. Leaving behind a proven goal scorer could prove lethal for most other teams, but definitely not for a squad which boasts of the likes of Messi, Dybala, Aguero, Higuain and Di Maria.

Radja Nainggolan (Belgium) | One of the most technically gifted midfielders in the Serie A, Roma’s Nainggolan was once again frozen out of the Belgium squad, forcing him to announce his retirement from international football. Despite an impressive campaign for Roma, where he even scored twice in the Champions League semi-final, Nainggolan was overlooked due to his strained relationship with coach Roberto Martinez.

David Luiz (Brazil) | It’s difficult for any football fan to forget Luiz’s reaction after their humiliating 7-1 loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final. After a dreadful season with Chelsea, where he was benched following a fall out with coach Antonio Conte, Luiz was overlooked by Brazil coach Tite too due to lack of playing time.

Anthony Martial (France) | France’s coach Didier Deschamps decided to overlook the 22-year-old Manchester United winger following an underwhelming season. With players like Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, Thomas Lemar and Antoine Griezemann leading the line for France, there is no dearth of talent in the squad.

Cesc Fabregas (Spain) | Despite assisting the goal that won Spain the title in 2010 and picking up two European trophies with the national side, Fabregas hasn’t featured for Spain since Julen Lopetegui took charge in 2016. With the abundance of talent in Spain’s midfield, a return to the squad looks like a far cry for the Chelsea midfielder.
