Anchor: Hello and welcome to CNBC-TV18's special series, The Olympian Effort. In less than a month, the world's best athletes will descend on London for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The biggest sporting event in the world will play host to 216 nations, each eager to claim glory.

The Olympics are a heady mix, on the one hand of human endeavour being put to the ultimate test and on the other of the pride and belief of nations, from Usain Bolt, the fastest man ever, to Muhammed Ali lighting the Olympic flame in Atlanta in 1996 to bring to a close a saga of pain and bitterness to Abhinav Bindra's gold medal to the terror attack at the Munich Games - the Olympics are about years of trial and tribulation distilled into iconic moments that capture the human spirit.
