Filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala is plotting Bollywood’s come back as a steady decline in coronavirus cases rekindle hopes of reopening of theatres and box-office action that the industry and cinema-owners desperately need.
The owner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment has six films in different stages of production that will be released over the next few months.
If there is one filmmaker other than Aditya Chopra who has the most number of films with the biggest names in Bollywood, it's Nadiadwala. And the line-up is impressive-'83, Bachchan Pandey, Tadap, Heropanti 2, Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali and recently announced Satyanarayan Ki Katha.
What makes these films special is that they have the biggest names in the industry and one has a promising debutant at the helm.
While Akshay Kumar is fronting Bachchan Pandey, Salman Khan will lead the charge in Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali.
Ranveer Singh will be seen as legendary Kapil Dev in '83 and Tiger Shroff will be back with some cool action in Heropanti 2. Kartik Aaryan helms Satyanarayan Ki Katha, while Ahan Shetty, the son of actor Suniel Shetty, debuts with Tadap.
A producer for more than 30 decades, the 55-year-old Nadiadwala has ruled the box office, with an envious strike rate of more than 80 percent.
He shares a strong bond with his leading men, one of the reasons they are happy to work with him. The producer’s successful run at the box office, however, remains the biggest incentive for them to flock to Nadiadwala Grandson.
Akshay has been Nadiadwala’s friend from school and the relationship has blossomed through Waqt Hamara Hai, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Jaan-E-Mann, Heyy Babyy and Kambakkht Ishq to the superhit comedy franchise Housefull that has already seen four successful installments.
Salman and Nadiadwala, too, go a long way. From hits like Jeet and Judwaa to Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Jaan-E-Mann, the duo did five back-to-back films. They again got together for Kick, a blockbuster that was also directed by Nadiadwala.
As for Tiger, there could not have been a better mentor for the young star. When it was decided that Jackie Shroff's son would be following in his father’s footsteps, Nadiadwala took it upon himself to give a launchpad to Tiger. Heropanti was was the first time that Nadiadwala Grandson launched a male lead.
The film was a hit. Baaghi followed and Baaghi 2 was a runaway success, emerging as one of the biggest blockbusters by a relatively new face. After Baaghi 3, they are working on Heropanti 2.
Little surprise then that Suniel Shetty trusted Nadiadwala with Ahan’s career. There are no half measures with Nadiadwala, he is a full-throttle guy. We will have to wait and see how Tadap shapes up but the posters indicate that Ahan is a star in the making, with Nadiadwala magic working again.
This is something that Kartik can also expect—Satyanarayan Ki Katha is the biggest film of his nascent but successful career. This is the first time Kartik is working with Nadiadwala but what makes this collaboration stand out is that Kartik is a rank outsider, while Tiger and Ahan are star sons. Nadiadwala choosing him for his next production is a nod to Kartik’s talent.
Ranveer and the rest of the country have been waiting for a while for '83, the first collaboration between Ranveer and Nadiadwala. With Akshay, Salman and Tiger agreeing to Housefull 5, Kick 2 and Baaghi 4, Nadiadwala would be bringing in some serious money for the industry in the years to come.
