Oxford University has invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to deliver a speech and she has accepted it, pro-vice-chancellor of the institute Jonathan Michie said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Bengal Global Business Summit in Kolkata, Michie -- who is also the president of Kellogg College at the university -- said, "We have invited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to deliver her speech at Oxford University". Michie, however, did not share further details at the event.
In conversation with the Times of India, he added, "We have invited her to deliver a lecture at our university and speak about her struggles and achievements. We are moved by her reflection on life and her views and policies on anti-racism and communal harmony. We have a strong Indian presence in our college. We want her to focus on anti-racism and women empowerment. the message will be taken well by our students and faculty."
For her part, Mamata Banerjee did not speak of the Oxford invitation and declared that the two-day Bengal Global Business Summit attracted investments worth Rs 3.76 lakh-crore involving 188 MoUs and Letters of Intent (LoI) across numerous sectors.
Speaking at the valedictory function of the two-day event, the chief minister said the summit also saw the announcement of a new policy for the development of the state. "The summit has received investment proposals worth Rs 3.76 lakh crore across numerous sectors. In all, 188 MoUs and LoIs have been signed," she said. Batting for the small-scale sector, Banerjee said, "Small is beautiful. It is the small-scale sector which creates employment. Now villages are the growth centres of the state. The state's leather industry has created 10 lakh jobs," she said.
