Dancer, philanthropist, businesswoman, owner of an IPL team – one can use many epithets to describe Nita Ambani. However, not many know that Nita Ambani started her professional career as a teacher – a job she continued even after marrying Mukesh Ambani, who was then the scion of the Ambani family and is today the chairperson of Reliance Industries.
A snippet from old interview which shows Nita and Mukesh Ambani in conversation with Simi Garewal is currently going viral on social media. In the interview, Nita Ambani revealed that she started teaching at Sunflower Nursery within a year of her marriage.
Mukesh and Nita Ambani got married in 1985 after a courtship of three weeks. They appeared on the chat show ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’ in the early 2000s, after the birth of their three children – Akash, Isha and Anant.
During the conversation, Nita Ambani revealed that she earned Rs 800 per month from her job as a teacher at Sunflower Nursery. Some people laughed at her, she admitted, but the job gave her satisfaction.
Nita Ambani’s job as a teacher also paid for “all their dinners” – as Mukesh Ambani revealed. “And all that salary was mine,” he told Simi Garewal with a laugh when Nita Ambani said “I was paid Rs 800 a month.”
“It paid for all our dinners,” said the billionaire chairperson of Reliance Industries to laughter from his wife. “People used to laugh at me at that time, but I think it gave me a lot of satisfaction,” Nita Ambani added.
The old snippet from ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’ has racked up over 3.3 million views on Instagram since being shared one day ago.
While she may no longer be a full-time teacher, Nita Ambani still has a passion for education. Today, she runs the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, named after her late father-in-law.
