Google released a new doodle on Thursday, February 29 to mark "Leap Day". The doodle depicted a frog marked with the leap day set involving the dates February 28 and March 1.
The "Leap Day" disappears as the frog jumps and the setting is illustrated with a background that has a pond with leaves and stones where the word "Google" can be seen.
It takes approximately 365.25 days for Earth to orbit the sun-a solar year. When added, four 0.25 days sum up to one full day. However, the days are generally rounded off in a calendar year to 365.
In order to compensate for the missing partial day, an extra day is added to the calendar approximately every four years, which helps synchronise with the seasons.
The "Leap Day" plays an important role in aligning the calendar year with the solar year and represents the time taken by planet Earth to complete a full orbit around the sun.
While deducting five hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds from one year may not have increased importance, the cumulative impact of reducing six hours annually over several years can cause disruptions in the calendar system.
According to the History Channel, a minimum of five million people globally celebrate their birthday on Leap Day. The odds of a person being born on February 29 are approximately one in 1, 461.
Some prominent names born on February 29 include former Prime Minister Moraji Desai, American singer and actor Dinah Shore, American author and motivational speaker and author Tony Robbins and French actress Michelle Morgan.
