Season eight of Koffee With Karan opened today with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh making their first-ever appearance together as a couple on a talk show. With sparkling conversation and some surprising secrets revealed on the Koffee couch, this episode was a step up indeed from the lacklustre previous season. For DeepVeer fans, there was an added bonus – nearly five years after their wedding, the couple released their wedding video to the world for the first time ever. This and much more happened on the first episode of Koffee With Karan 8.
Here are 5 secrets we learned about Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s courtship, marriage, and lives on Koffee With Karan 8:
Deepika and Ranveer were secretly engaged for 3 years
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh started dating in 2012 during the filming of Ram Leela and got married in 2018. However, Ranveer revealed on the Koffee couch that they were secretly engaged for three years before their marriage. Going by host Karan Johar’s startled response to this revelation, it is clear that not many people knew about their secret engagement. “I proposed in 2015, and we were secretly engaged for three years,” Ranveer said.
Deepika’s engagement ring was ‘beyond my resources,’ said Ranveer
Ranveer Singh proposed to Deepika Padukone during a holiday they took together in Maldives in 2015. The Band Baaja Baaraat actor revealed that he bought Deepika’s engagement ring before leaving for the vacation – and it was beyond his means at the time.
When Karan Johar asked if Ranveer proposed with a beautiful diamond ring, he replied: “Yes sir. Beyond my resources at the time, perhaps, but even so, a very impressive one.” He added that he bought the ring after consulting his sister and his mother.
How Deepika’s mother reacted to her engagement
While the couple was congratulated and the dinner went on, Deepika’s mother Ujjala expressed her reservations to her daughter once they came back home. “Who is this guy? He’s proposed marriage and you have said yes also?” Deepika’s mom asked. In fact, it took her many years to warm up to Ranveer, but he is now one of her "favourite" persons.
Ranveer Singh on dealing with flops
Ranveer Singh opened up about dealing with failure in the film industry, admitting that he felt “not good” after a string of flops at the box office which began with 83. “Let me take you back to the pandemic. Coming out of the pandemic, we had this lovely film 83 (2021) which everybody loved. It just released at the wrong time. 48 hours before the release, we lost key markets because they all shut down due to Omicron. Unfortunately, a lovely film had the stigma of being a commercial underperformer,” said Ranveer.
The lacklustre performance of 83 at the box office was followed by Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Cirkus. Both films failed to impress the audience, although the former found its niche audience on streaming platforms. “I had not seen three major flops in a row. So, it was new to me and I wasn't at my best, especially three months after Cirkus,” said Ranveer.
Deepika once told Ranveer he is ‘underconfident’
Ranveer Singh has toned down his maximalist sartorial style to a great extent, and one reason for that is insights that his wife Deepika once provided. “You come off as supremely confident, but you are under-confident. Stop distracting people from who you are with all these flashy clothes,” Deepika once told Ranveer, who also admitted that he did not want his flamboyant dressing sense to become the one thing that defines him as a person.
