Ratan Tata came to the defence of the young woman who trolled him.

Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away late Wednesday night at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital at the age of 86. As leaders from politics and industry expressed their grief at the loss of a towering figure, the public reflected on his life marked by not just professional achievements but also personal acts of kindness and empathy.

Known for his sharp business acumen and visionary leadership, Tata was equally celebrated for his deep philanthropy and genuine concern for the wellbeing of others. One memorable instance of his compassion resurfaced in the wake of his passing, highlighting his unique humility and kindness even in the most unexpected settings.

In February 2020, shortly after joining Instagram, Tata shared a post marking a personal milestone—reaching one million followers on the platform. His message was a simple one, expressing gratitude to his followers: “This wonderful online family is not what I expected when I joined Instagram, and I have you to thank for it.”

Among the many congratulatory messages, one stood out for its unusual tone. An Instagram user referred to Tata as "chhotu," a term typically used affectionately in Hindi to address someone younger or smaller. The comment quickly attracted backlash, with many accusing the user of being disrespectful to the respected industrialist.

In an unexpected turn, it was Tata himself who came to the defence of the young woman. He asked his followers to refrain from harsh judgement, posting a comment that read, “There is a child in each of us. Please treat this young lady with respect.”

The incident, which could have easily been dismissed as a minor online exchange, became a testament to Tata’s character. In a world where public figures are often quick to take offence, his response was a reminder of his deep understanding and empathy. Screenshots of his message have since resurfaced, with many citing it as an example of the kind-heartedness that defined his legacy.
