Exclusive | Prices of medicines used to treat common ailments set to increase steeply this year

For the first time in many years, prices of nearly 800 drugs and medical devices under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) are set to increase by over 10 percent, owing to a sharp rise in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), government officials said.

Annual hikes in the prices of drugs listed in the NELM, also called essential drugs and used in various government health programmes apart from retail sales, is based on the WPI.

Wholesale inflation across the country rose to 12.96 percent in January, according to the office of the economic adviser in the ministry of commerce and industry. WPI inflation, which was as low as 2.51 percent in January 2021, has remained in double digits since April 2021.
