Sweden has one of the lowest smoking rates in the world. Only five percent of Sweden's population are daily smokers. This has been made possible by their secret anti-smoking weapon - Snus.

A European Union survey published in a report by Bloomberg showed that the country has the lowest smoking percentage in the region.

While more than a quarter of the population in 15 out of the 28 surveyed countries are daily smokers, the number is astonishingly low for Sweden.

The definition for Tobacco free, as per 'The Lancet' medical journal is a smoking rate of less than five percent.

The main reason behind Sweden’s success has been a product called Snus. They are little pouches of moist tobacco that a user puts under his upper lip.

The product which is used by over 15 percent of the population has led to the decline of the use of smoking, a practice to which over a third of Swedes were addicted in the 80s.

The rise in the use of Snus has not only decreased the number of smokers but also that of lung cancer patients. "Sweden boasts Europe’s lowest male lung-cancer death rate as well as the lowest male death rate from smoking-related cardiovascular diseases, and the lowest male death rate from other cancers that are attributable to tobacco", said Kenneth E. Warner and Harold A. Pollack in their article in The Atlantic.
