A Sneak Peek Into India's One billion Vaccination Journey

January 13, 2022 / 09:46 PM IST

India’s five-fold strategy of “Test-Track-Treat-Vaccinate-Adherence to COVID Appropriate Behaviour” has recently been highlighted by the Union Health Secretary as an effective tool to manage and control COVID-19. By administering 1 billion vaccines in October, India has shown incredible progress in ensuring public health and safety against coronavirus. The country’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has recently gone over 130 as per the provisional reports. The nation’s immunization journey started from anxiety and moved to assurance within a span of 11 months. The country took 85 days to administer the first 10 crore doses but slowly and steadily made progress that became exemplary, when on October 21 the cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administration crossed the historic 100-crore milestone.

From 85 days for reaching 10 crore doses, 45 days for the next 10 crore shots, and another 29 days to touch the 30 crore mark, India crossed 50 crore vaccination on August 6. The country administered 75 crore doses by September 13th. The biggest jump, however, came on September 17, when more than 2.1 crore shots were given in one day. Finally, on October 21, India became the second nation after China to have administered 1 billion vaccine doses.

With 50% of the eligible population being inoculated, India is all geared up for achieving 100% vaccination coverage by conducting mass vaccination drives. The country’s vaccination program has finally overcome the initial patchy phase and picked momentum to match the global average. The highest since March 2020, the recovery rate for India stands at 98.36% currently.

Helping the nation achieve its immunisation goal, Sanjeevani: A Shot of life, a Network 18 & Federal Bank initiative, came up with several programs for increasing vaccine awareness ever since India was hit by the second deadly wave of COVID-19. Launched in April, the campaign undertook the challenge of fighting against deep-rooted vaccine hesitancy and encouraged non-urban masses to get the jab.

Looking from Sanjeevani’s lens, India’s vaccination journey moves from resistance to acceptance, where the right information has changed the minds of those who were skeptical about inoculation. Taking vaccine education door-to-door with Sanjeevani Gaadi has traveled through remote locations in India and made it big on roads in its efforts to spread awareness on the importance of getting vaccinated.

Sanjeevani, India's largest vaccination drive, has been holding group shows and carrying out one-on-one counseling sessions to undo factors like vaccine hesitancy and misconceptions that have been going around the vaccine. With the continued efforts of the Sanjeevani team, the hesitancy has now been taken over by belief. Even in the rural areas, people are coming forward to get the shot of life. The lack of information has been removed by amplification of vaccine information to the heart of India to accelerate the drive for maximum vaccination.

Today as India inches towards 100% full vaccination, Network18, and Federal Bank are hosting India’s first vaccine telethon on 12th December to encourage people to get both the shots. Voicing ‘Poora Tika Laga’, the telethon will be aired across Network 18 TV and digital platforms.
