Lily Gladstone won the best actor – female award for their role in “Killers of the Flower Moon”. The actor won the Golden Globe in the “Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Drama” category. With this, they became the first Indigenous actor to win a Golden Globe.
Gladstone, 37, beat the likes of Annete Bening, Cailee Spaeny, Carey Mulligan and Greta Lee to bag the award for their role as real-life Mollie Burkhart in the Martin Scorsese directorial.
And the #GoldenGlobes award for Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Drama goes to... Lily Gladstone for their role on Killers of the Flower Moon! Congrats! pic.twitter.com/BrkkBmfa6V— Golden Globe Awards (@goldenglobes) January 8, 2024
The actor was overcome with emotions while accepting their Golden Globe trophy and gave a part of their speech in Blackfeet language. "Native actors used to speak their lines in English, and the sound mixer would run them backwards to accomplish native languages on camera," they said. "Thank you Marty, thank you Leo, thank you Bob. You were all changing things. Thank you for being such allies." "This is a historic win and it just doesn't belong to me," they added.
This is Gladstone's first Golden Globe nomination and win. Starring opposite fellow nominees Leonardo DiCaprio who played Ernest Burkhart and Robert De Niro as as William King Hale, they played the role of Mollie Burkhart whose family and community in the Osage Nation of 1920s Oklahoma were the targets of serial killings.
"Killers of the Flower Moon" is an adaption from David Grann’s nonfiction 2017 book -- "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI".
Meanwhile, Gladstone's role in the Scorsese epic has generated a lot of Oscar buzz for them as well. If nominated, they would be the fourth-ever Indigenous person in the Best Actress category and the first-ever to win.
According to a report by Vulture, Gladstone was on the verge of pausing their acting ambitions and applying for a job at the Washington State Department of Agriculture. The actor was inspired by their passion for bees -- who have been negatively impacted by Asian giant hornets, an invasive species. They were applying for a "seasonal data analytics job" that tracked the hornets at the space department.
However, soon, they got a notification for a Zoom call with Scorsese.
