Errant drivers in Mumbai will be able to pay the fine for violation of traffic rules by simply swiping a debit or credit card from January 12. Over a thousand e-challan machines would be distributed to traffic constables for this purpose. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Milind Bharambe said the initiative would be launched in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on January 12.

The authorities expect that this will curb the corruption and also help the police identify repeat offenders easily. If a person is not carrying a card, he or she would be given 15-day time to pay the fine through internet banking, and will be charged Rs 10 for every day's delay thereafter.
