Trial of odd-even car scheme in Delhi today

The dry run on Thursday will be held from 9 am to 11 am. Over 5000 civil defence volunteers are being deployed to maintain a check across 200 spots in the capital. Four volunteers are also expected to accompany traffic police officers on each spot. Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai will conduct an inspection of the preparations on Thursday.

A day before the odd and even number car scheme is implemented in Delhi, the Delhi government is conducting a dry run on Thursday to check the preparations and to familiarise the residents with the plan. The odd and even number car scheme to combat rising levels of pollution in the city will begin on January 1 and will initially be in force for a trial period.

In order to ensure strict implementation of the scheme, the Delhi government has issued an order to various agencies, including the DMRC and the civic bodies, asking them to allow in their parking lots only odd-numbered cars on odd dates and vice versa. According to a senior official, if parking agencies are found flouting government's directives, strict action will be taken against them.

At present, there are nearly 250 authorised parking facilities under all three municipal corporations across the national capital, besides those under the New Delhi Municipal Council.

The city government has also tied up with Twitter for real-time information on availability of public transport for commuters.

Meanwhile, even as the scheme is all set to go to trials on January 1, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday questioned the Delhi government for the exemptions given to women and 2 wheelers in the scheme. The government has been asked to respond to the court's notice by January 6.
