Protests against the Supreme Court ruling allowing women of menstrual age to enter the Sabarimala Temple has resulted in a fall of pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh, The Hindu has reported.

According to the report, Andhra Pradesh accounts for a substantial number of pilgrims visiting the hilltop shrine of Lord Ayyappa in Kerala every year. However, after the violent protests which took place to prevent women aged between 10-50 years from entering the temple, there has been a dip of 30 to 40 percent in the estimated 10 lakh devotees visiting the shrine.

The fall in the number of devotees has also weakened the business of shops around the temple, which have recorded drastic dip in their sales. The sale of ‘irumudis’ (bundle containing ritual offerings), black dress and pooja material has gone down, the shopkeepers told the publication.

While the order of the apex court brought suffering for many, some devotees seemed happy with the decision. The report cited devotees as saying that the decrease in number of people visiting the shrine, following the agitation, has given a chance to pilgrims to spend more time in having the darshan in the temple premises.
